OpenRTB

OpenRTB is an IAB Tech Lab protocol that standardizes how programmatic buyers and sellers exchange bid-request and bid-response information for real-time advertising transactions.

Why it matters

A shared protocol reduces custom integration work and gives independent platforms a common vocabulary for inventory, devices, media formats, deals, supply-chain information and bidding.

How it works

  1. The seller sends a structured bid request.
  2. The buyer evaluates the request and can return a structured bid response.
  3. Media, price, deal and tracking fields follow agreed protocol semantics.
  4. Implementations still apply their own business, privacy and quality policies.

Frequently asked questions

Is OpenRTB a company or platform?

No. OpenRTB is an interoperability protocol used by many independent ad-tech platforms.

Does using OpenRTB guarantee auction quality?

No. The protocol standardizes communication; platforms still need their own validation, fraud controls, privacy rules and commercial policies.
